The process of assimilation is essential because it describes how individuals incorporate new information into their existing cognitive structures. When we encounter new data, rather than altering our established frameworks of understanding, we fit the new information into what we already know. For instance, if a child already has a concept of a dog and then sees a new dog that differs in breed, they will use their current understanding of dogs to categorize the new dog without fundamentally changing the concept of "dog."
